Medical Mistrust Initiative
The medical mistrust initiative provides distinct opportunities to engage in community discussions regarding medical mistrust and the challenges it imposes on health access and equity. The initiative comprises of a series of events led by various community partners working to achieve healthy equity in collaboration with the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services. Please monitor this page to learn about past events and discover upcoming events.
The aims of the Medical Mistrust Initiative series are to:
- Discuss systemic and foundational challenges within healthcare settings and how it impacts health and equity in various communities
- Share effective practices and practical solutions that improve access and equity to impacted communities.
- Improve understanding of the historical foundations of medical mistrust in impacted communities.

Events:
The UCLA Center for HIV Identification , Prevention, and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) Community Advisory Board (CAB) in collaboration with Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center Program (PAETC), AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) and REACH LA hosted a seminar, entitled “Impact of Systemic Racism on Current PrEP Uptake in Black and Latinx Communities: A Solution Oriented Approach for the Future” on Tuesday, May 11th, 2021 from 11:00AM-1:00PM, PST.
The objectives of the seminar were to:
- Discuss systemic racism within healthcare settings and how it impacts PrEP access and uptake in Black and Latinx communities
- Provide key steps and resources to address systemic racism and implement the necessary changes at the provider-level
- Highlight and share effective practices that improve access to and uptake of PrEP and other HIV prevention services

The UCLA Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services in collobaoration with Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center Program (PAETC), Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME), California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC) and Charles Drew University (CDU) hosted a virtual training on medical mistrust, entitled, “Addressing Medical Mistrust in Black Communities: Implications for HIV/Hepatitis/STIs, COVID-19 and Other conditions” on Saturday, August 29, 2020, from 8:30am-1:30pm PST.
The objectives of the seminar were to:
- Describe the historical foundations of medical mistrust in Black communities.
- Describe the effects of medical mistrust on health care behaviors, HIV, COVID-19 and other health outcomes in Black communities.
- Discuss clinic and system level changes that foster patient trust.
- List the skills and resources needed to interact with patients in a manner that encourages healthcare engagement and improves health outcomes

The UCLA Center for HIV Identification, Prevention, and Treatment Services hosted a webinar, entitled: “Gaining Patients’ Trust in the Age of COVID-19.” on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 from 11am-12:30pm PST
The objectives of the seminar were to:
- Discuss challenges in access to and provision of HIV testing, prevention and treatment services during this coronavirus pandemic period and provide solutions to improve the care continuum.
- Discuss medical mistrust as it relates to patient provider relationships, messaging, telehealth, contact tracing, surveillance, treatment and prevention and further discuss strategies for increasing trust in the system.
- Discuss changes in HIV and COVID-19 care patterns in racial and ethnic minorities, address the disparities in health outcomes and discuss strategies to increase access to testing, prevention, treatment and clinical trials for HIV and COVID-19.
