Numbers You Can’t Ignore: Determinants and Disparities Among Asian & Pacific Islanders (Colloquia, July 2014) – Flyer

Join us on Thursday, July 10, 2014 9:30am to 10:30am for an upcoming colloquium entitled “Numbers You Can’t Ignore: Determinants and Disparities Among Asian & Pacific Islanders.” Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) are often categorized as a “single racial group” that shares the same culture, values, and experiences. In reality, API encompasses over 50 distinct racial/ethnic groups, in which more than 30 different languages are spoken. Reports of Asian Pacific success often focuses on major populations that have been in the United States for many generations, rendering the issues of smaller and less established API groups invisible. Members of community organizations serving API clients have gathered data (broken down by nationality) about the API community to bring attention to the social determinants that puts this population at increased risk for HIV/STI and to advocate for more accessible, affordable HIV related services that are culturally- and linguistically- appropriate for APIs.
