Details:

The Center for HIV Identification, Prevention, and Treatment Services (CHIPTS), UCLA School of Public Affairs, UCLA AIDS Institute, Drew CARES, and California State University Dominguez Hills will co-host the 2008 new investigator conference, HIV Research: The Next Generation, on Monday, April 7, 2008. This annual one-day conference provides a forum for emerging HIV investigators (e.g., predoctoral trainees, postdoctoral trainees, community-based investigators, and undergraduate students) to present the findings from their HIV-related research. The conference objectives are:

  • To provide a forum for university-affiliated and community-based investigators to meet and learn from one another;
  • To practice making presentations and discussing posters in a local, informal forum prior to national conferences; and,
  • To increase the visibility of investigators’ research in the area of HIV.

The conference will consist of oral and poster presentations by university-affiliated investigators and community-based investigators and a keynote presentation. Presentations and posters may be based on studies in progress; they need not be finished projects. There will be an oral session focused exclusively on community-based research or programs. Hongjie Liu , Ph.D., .M.S., Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Community Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, will deliver a keynote presentation entitled, “The HIV/AIDS Epidemic in China: Challenges and Opportunities”.

We are writing to urge your participation and that of other new investigators or community-based investigators conducting research or implementing innovative HIV treatment or prevention programs. The goal is to have as many university-affiliated investigators and community-based investigators conducting HIV-related research at Los Angeles-based institutions present their research findings or program overviews or simply attend. The conference is open to all faculty, staff, undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral students and community members.

This year’s event will be held at UCLA’s Covel Commons. Registration opens at 7:45 a.m., with the conference program beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 3:00 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Free parking will be provided to all attendees.

Please click here to register for this event and/or to submit an abstract on-line. The abstract deadline is March 14, 2008. Attached is a summary of the information you will need to provide in order to register for the conference and/or submit an abstract. Should you have any questions about this conference, please contact Ky Coussey, CHIPTS Event Coordinator, at kcoussey@mednet.ucla.edu or 310/794-0448.
