Research & Interest
Steven Shoptaw is Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is Principal Investigator of a NIDA-funded center investigating medication development for stimulant abuse and of a cooperative agreement with NIDA to evaluate the sexual acquisition and transmission of HIV and other infectious diseases. Together with his community research partners, Dr. Shoptaw has been awarded several projects to evaluate the value of behavioral drug abuse treatment models as HIV prevention methods. Dr. Shoptaw also is Director of the Intervention Core of the UCLA Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services and is Executive Director for Safe House, a residential facility for persons with HIV/AIDS who have co-occurring mental illness and/or chemical dependency, a project supported by the City of Los Angeles Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS program.
