Dr. Flannery is co-director of the UCLA-NPI Center for Community Health (CCH). She has over 20 years of non-profit leadership and organizational development experience. Dr. Flannery launched Juma Ventures in 1991 as a project of Larkin Street Youth Center, where she served as Executive Director for five years. Diane raised the capital to start all of Juma's business ventures—the Ben & Jerry's scoop shops on Chestnut Street, Castro Street, and Haight Street, as well as concession businesses at Candlestick and Pacific Bell Parks—and led the design and implementation of an innovative development program that supports youth as they work in small businesses. Under her leadership, CCH has expanded its vision to focus on the global well-being of children and families, and aims to be the 21st century leader in transforming the relationship between behavioral research and the marketplace. She oversees CCH’s continued commitment to develop avenues to improve the quality of life for children and adults in high-risk situations. She has authored several journal articles, including articles on families living with HIV that appeared in JAIDS and AIDS Care, and a number of book chapters dealing with corporate social responsibility, management of social enterprises, and the design of sustainable intervention programs. Diane’s work has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Youth Employment Coalition, and other national foundations.
